Information and communication technologies (ICT) are increasingly central to UoWA’s water strategy, enabling evidence-based planning, real-time monitoring, and operational optimisation.
Smart Metering and Monitoring
Digital meters are installed in over 60% of campus buildings, with full coverage targeted by 2026. These meters allow real-time tracking of water use and facilitate rapid detection of inefficiencies.
Automated Control and Dashboards
All green areas are equipped with automated irrigation systems. ICT monitoring has reduced water consumption by up to 40% compared with manual irrigation, and in 2024, over 15 leaks were identified and rectified, saving thousands of litres of water. Data are consolidated on central dashboards for oversight and decision-making.
Student and Staff Engagement
Student-led projects develop low-cost monitoring tools and innovative solutions for water management. These initiatives integrate educational outcomes with practical improvements to campus operations.
Future Development
Plans include full metering of all buildings, integration of predictive analytics for water allocation, and embedding monitoring into the university’s central Sustainability Performance Portal.
