UOWA systematically collects, treats, and recycles inorganic waste, integrating campus-wide segregation, collection, and processing with the Directorate of Imam Hussain Holy Shrine and Karbala Municipality.
Current Practices & Impact (2025):
· Total inorganic waste: 580 tons
· Treated: 493 tons (~85 % treatment rate)
· Breakdown of Inorganic Waste Treated:
o Paper: 338 tons
o Soft plastics: 25 tons
o Hard plastics: 21 tons
o Glass & metals: 109 tons
Key Initiatives:
· Source segregation using colour-coded bins across campus
· Digitalisation reduces paper generation
· Reusable water bottles and ceramic mugs replace single-use plastics
· Circular economy approach prevents landfill overflow
