The University of Warith Al-Anbiyaa implements deliberate parking policies to reduce private vehicle use and promote sustainable commuting. Parking areas occupy only 3,200 m², representing 2.8% of the total campus area (114,210 m²). This limited allocation, combined with a 15% reduction in parking space compared to previous years, reflects a strategic effort to prioritise green infrastructure, pedestrian pathways, and low-emission mobility alternatives.
Key initiatives include:
· Restricted Parking Zones: Students require valid parking permits, reducing unnecessary vehicle use.
· Parking Fees for Students: Introduced to discourage personal car ownership while promoting shuttle services and carpooling.
· Staff-Only Shaded Parking: Sunshades are provided exclusively for staff vehicles, further discouraging student car use.
· Dedicated Carpool and Bicycle Parking: Priority spaces are reserved for shared vehicles, and additional bike racks support cycling as an alternative mode of transport.
· Conversion to Green/Open Spaces: Selected parking areas have been repurposed into landscaped zones, enhancing campus sustainability and aesthetics.
These measures have successfully controlled parking demand despite a growing campus population, maintaining a sustainable parking-to-population ratio. By limiting vehicle availability and incentivising alternative transport, the university reduces traffic congestion, lowers emissions, and fosters a more pedestrian- and bicycle-friendly campus environment.
These strategies contribute directly to SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities) and SDG 13 (Climate Action), while demonstrating effective institutional policy in sustainable mobility management.
