Efficiency in water use is a key component of UoWA’s sustainability framework. The university implements a combination of infrastructure upgrades, smart irrigation, landscaping practices, and behavioural interventions.
Water-Saving Standards and Appliances
Approximately 84% of toilets, taps, and irrigation facilities have been upgraded to water-saving models, including low-flush toilets, low-flow taps, and waterless urinals (with full replacement expected by 2026). These measures substantially reduce freshwater demand while maintaining operational functionality.
Landscaping and Smart Irrigation
All designated green areas on campus are managed with ICT-enabled irrigation systems that monitor soil moisture and automate watering schedules. This approach ensures precise water distribution and eliminates unnecessary irrigation. Native and drought-resistant plant species are used to further reduce water requirements.
Awareness and Behavioural Change
Behavioural interventions complement infrastructure measures, including workshops, signage, and campaigns to encourage responsible water use among staff and students.
