UOWA Strengthens Water Security Through Local to Global Collaboration

The University of Warith Al-Anbiyaa (UOWA) continues to expand its leadership in water sustainability by linking local partnerships, national initiatives, and international platforms to address Iraq’s growing water challenges.

Local Engagement: Workshops and Institutional Cooperation

In February 2024, UOWA hosted an online workshop titled “Global Water Crisis”, led by Assistant Professor Dr Tahseen Abdulrahman Al-Badri. The session explored the drivers of global and local water scarcity, emphasising the impact of climate change and the need for sustainable resource management. The event deepened student and faculty awareness while connecting academic insight to practical community solutions. Promoting a culture of water consciousness on campus - UOWA targets awareness campaigns, and student-led initiatives aimed at reducing consumption in academic and residential facilities. These on-campus actions are complemented by educational programmes encouraging staff and students to adopt sustainable water habits as part of daily university life.

Beyond campus boundaries, UOWA extends these efforts to the wider community through public lectures, environmental awareness drives, and student–community projects that encourage responsible water use, reduction of waste, and sustainable irrigation practices. These initiatives align with Iraq’s national water conservation goals and help strengthen local resilience against water scarcity.

Building on this momentum, a delegation from the College of Administration and Economics at UOWA visited the College of Tourism Sciences at the University of Karbala to discuss academic cooperation. The dialogue explored joint opportunities in sustainability-oriented education and research — including aspects of water management, resource efficiency, and environmental awareness. Such collaborations highlight UOWA’s proactive role in fostering inter-university partnerships that strengthen regional knowledge networks around sustainable development.

National Cooperation: Iraqi Water Week 2024

From 11–17 March 2024, UOWA contributed to Iraqi Water Week, organised by Humat Dijlah (The Tigris River Protectors Association). The event mobilised stakeholders nationwide through workshops, policy discussions, and public campaigns aimed at improving water awareness and community participation.
UOWA’s engagement reflected its growing commitment to national capacity-building in water security and the promotion of community-driven solutions across Iraq.

Regional Collaboration: Water Management Conference

At the regional level, UOWA participated in the Water Management Conference – Dubai 2024, which brought together government authorities, engineers, urban planners, and sustainability experts from across the MENA region. The conference explored innovative technologies, integrated management systems, and resilient infrastructure for sustainable water futures.
UOWA’s involvement strengthened its role as a knowledge partner from Iraq, linking local experiences to regional strategies.

Global Outlook and Sustainable Development

While regionally based, the Dubai conference reflected global ambitions toward advancing SDG 6: Clean Water and Sanitation. Through these engagements, UOWA continues to contribute to international dialogues on sustainable water use, policy reform, and research collaboration.

Looking Ahead

UOWA plans to further expand its impact through:

·        Joint research and educational projects with local and regional partners

·        Community-based awareness campaigns addressing water efficiency

·        Hosting interdisciplinary symposiums on water and climate resilience

·        Strengthening data-driven research on water conservation and ecosystem management

By linking local initiatives to global dialogue, the University of Warith Al-Anbiyaa reaffirms its mission to turn research and education into tangible, community-based solutions for a water-secure future.
