Collaboration with NGOs to Advance the SDGs (2024)
In 2024, the University of Warith Al-Anbiyaa strengthened its role as an academic institution working alongside non-governmental organisations (NGOs) to deliver tangible impact for society and advance the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
· Health and Well-being (SDG 3): The university partnered with the Atabat health NGOs to deploy student and faculty volunteers in medical detachments during the Arbaeen pilgrimage, providing urgent health services to millions of visitors. In addition, UOWA co-organised the Warith International Conference with the Iraqi Heart & Chest Association (a recognised NGO), convening clinicians, researchers, and civil society to address cardiovascular health challenges and share best practice.
· Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions (SDG 16): In collaboration with the Misbah Al-Hussein Relief & Development Foundation (NGO), the university supported a capacity-building workshop in Karbala aimed at strengthening report-writing, transparency, and monitoring skills among practitioners, enhancing local governance and accountability.
· Quality Education, Innovation, and Partnerships (SDGs 4, 9, 17): UOWA signed a cooperation agreement with the Arab Union for Digital Empowerment, a regional civil society organisation, to expand opportunities in cybersecurity, artificial intelligence, and digital transformation training for students and staff. This collaboration contributes to inclusive education, innovation ecosystems, and long-term capacity building.
· Sustainable Cities, Climate Action, and Cultural Exchange (SDGs 11, 13, 16, 17): Through its cooperation with the Atabat NGOs, the university engaged students and staff in environmental clean-up campaigns, supported cross-cultural and educational programmes such as the Islam is Life conference and the Spring of Martyrdom Festival, and advanced local strategies for sustainable urban management.
By integrating academic expertise with NGO initiatives across health, development, education, and culture, the University of Warith Al-Anbiyaa demonstrates its commitment to societal engagement and international best practice, ensuring that higher education directly supports Iraq’s communities and contributes to global SDG progress.
