UoWA 2025 Carbon Inventory and Emissions Profile

The University of Warith Al-Anbiyaa (UoWA) maintains an annual greenhouse gas emissions inventory covering direct emissions (Scope 1), indirect emissions from purchased electricity (Scope 2), and other relevant indirect emissions (Scope 3).

The 2025 inventory incorporates on-site diesel consumption for generators, purchased national-grid electricity, off-campus fuel use associated with academic and administrative activities, and international academic travel. The inventory establishes a reference point for monitoring the University's carbon footprint and evaluating future emissions-reduction measures.

Note: Total emissions are calculated as 240.1 + 298.1 + 121.0 + 5.0 = 664.2 tCO₂e. Scope 3 emissions total 126.0 tCO₂e. Percentages are rounded.

2. Scope 3 Emissions

In 2025, UoWA estimated its Scope 3 emissions at 126.0 tCO₂e, representing approximately 19.0% of total reported greenhouse gas emissions.

The estimate comprises:

  • Off-campus fuel use: 121.0 tCO₂e associated with academic and administrative activities.
  • International academic travel: 5.0 tCO₂e estimated from 12 international flights annually.

Together, these sources account for 126.0 tCO₂e of indirect emissions outside the University's direct operational control. They also identify opportunities to reduce emissions through improved travel planning, efficient transport arrangements, and the use of virtual meetings and digital learning where appropriate.

To improve inventory accuracy, the University will document the calculation methods, emission factors, activity-data sources, and assumptions used to estimate Scope 3 emissions.

3. 2025 Campus Electricity Mix

The University's reported electricity consumption in 2025 totalled 1,188,000 kWh

The national grid supplied 594,000 kWh, accounting for 50.0% of the reported electricity total. Diesel generators supplied 415,800 kWh, equivalent to 35.0%, while the campus solar photovoltaic system generated 178,200 kWh, representing 15.0%.

These figures provide a basis for monitoring electricity sources and evaluating opportunities to expand renewable energy generation and reduce reliance on diesel generators.

4. Carbon Mitigation Measures

UoWA identifies the following measures as priorities for reducing its operational and wider emissions footprint:

  1. Renewable energy expansion: Monitor solar photovoltaic generation, recorded at 178,200 kWh in 2025, and assess the feasibility of increasing renewable electricity capacity.
  2. Energy efficiency: Improve the efficiency of lighting, air-conditioning systems, and electrical equipment through energy-efficiency initiatives and building upgrades.
  3. Generator optimisation: Monitor diesel consumption, recorded at 103,950 litres in 2025, alongside generator operating hours, maintenance activities, and avoidable operation.
  4. Sustainable transport: Promote energy-efficient transport options for students and staff and assess opportunities to reduce fuel use associated with university activities.
  5. Digital alternatives: Use virtual meetings, online learning, and digital examinations where appropriate to reduce avoidable travel.
  6. Scope 3 monitoring: Improve data collection for off-campus fuel use and academic travel, which accounted for an estimated 126.0 tCO₂e in 2025.

These measures provide a framework for monitoring progress and identifying further opportunities for emissions reduction.

5. Annual Monitoring and Reporting

The University will update its greenhouse gas emissions inventory annually using documented activity data and appropriate emission factors.

The 2025 baseline records total emissions of 664.2 tCO₂e, comprising 240.1 tCO₂e from Scope 1, 298.1 tCO₂e from Scope 2, and 126.0 tCO₂e from Scope 3.

Annual reviews will track changes across all three scopes, assess the effectiveness of mitigation measures, and identify priorities for further reductions.

Supporting records will include generator fuel logs, electricity bills, solar generation data, travel records, and documented calculation methods for estimated emissions.

This inventory establishes a reference point for evaluating the University's progress towards more energy-efficient and lower-carbon campus operations.
