Water Consumption per Person

1. Method

In 2025, UoWA used 31.48 m³ of water per campus person (FTE). The figure is the annual volume of inbound treated and extracted water divided by the campus population in Full-Time Equivalents (FTE).

In line with the indicator definition, the volume includes water from the municipal supply, groundwater wells and the river. Harvested rainwater and treated wastewater are recorded separately and are not part of the volume used for this indicator.

2. Water volume used for the indicator

The indicator uses 340,000 m³ of inbound treated and extracted water, all measured by smart digital meters at each source.

3. Campus population

The 2025 campus population is 10,800 FTE: students and employees regularly associated with university operations, excluding visitors and other populations outside the defined campus population. Both figures come from official 2025 institutional records.

Evidence provided:

  1. Official 2025 letter from the Student Registration Centre confirming 10,000 students (FTE).
  2. Official 2025 letter from the Human Resources Department confirming 800 employees (FTE).

The total of 10,800 FTE is the sum of these two figures.

4. Calculation

Water consumption per campus person in 2025 is 31.48 m³ per FTE per year.

The numerator is the inbound treated and extracted water from section 2. The denominator is the campus population from section 3.

5. Data management

The water figure comes from the campus-wide metering system: five smart meters on the water sources (1 mains, 3 wells, 1 river) and meters in all 20 buildings. The Maintenance and Services Department reviews the readings weekly and records them in Excel spreadsheets.

The figures are verified source by source:

  • Mains water: compared with municipal water invoices.
  • Wells and river intake: compared with pump operating logs.
  • Buildings: compared with maintenance records to detect abnormal consumption.

The indicator gives a standard measure of annual water use per campus person and supports the university's monitoring of water-efficiency performance.
