Cooperation on Water Security

The University of Warith Al-Anbiyaa  strengthened its cooperation on water security through partnerships with two government water authorities: the Water Resources Directorate in the Holy Governorate of Karbala and the General Directorate of Water at the Ministry of Construction, Housing, Municipalities and Public Works.

1. Cooperation with the Karbala Water Resources Directorate

On 20 June 2025, a delegation from the College of Engineering made an official visit to the Water Resources Directorate in the Holy Governorate of Karbala. The visit focused on the challenges of water scarcity and on practical, sustainable approaches to water-resource management in response to the growing water challenges facing Iraq.

The delegation met with the Director of the Directorate and its engineering and technical staff to exchange research and technical expertise. Discussions addressed the development of appropriate solutions through cooperation between academic specialists and the relevant government authorities.

UOWA and the Directorate also signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on 20 June 2025. It establishes a framework for cooperation and exchange of expertise in water resources and water management, and supports knowledge exchange, technical collaboration and research-oriented approaches to water-security challenges in Karbala and Iraq.

2. Cooperation with the General Directorate of Water, Ministry of Construction, Housing, Municipalities and Public Works

On 4 September 2025, a delegation representing UOWA met with the General Directorate of Water at the Ministry of Construction, Housing, Municipalities and Public Works and signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the two parties. The cooperation brings the university together with the national water authority to discuss and pursue ways of:

  • reducing water consumption and improving the efficiency of water use;
  • addressing drought and its impacts on water availability;
  • combating desertification and land degradation.

The MoU provides a framework for joint technical and research work between UOWA’s academic specialists and the Ministry’s water specialists, so that practical, evidence-based solutions can support sustainable water management at national level.

Through these partnerships, UOWA demonstrates its commitment to working with government authorities to address water scarcity, strengthen water security and contribute academic and technical expertise to the sustainable management of water resources.
