Sustainable Water Extraction on and Off Campus

1. Our natural water sources
UOWA extracts water from two natural sources: three groundwater wells, each 150 m deep, and the nearby river. Municipal supply is not counted as extraction under this indicator.

2. Licensed and controlled extraction
Water extraction at UOWA is carried out under a licence issued by the Water Resources Directorate in Karbala, which sets an annual extraction limit. In 2025, the University’s extraction remained within the limit approved by the Directorate.

3. Measuring every source
Each of the three wells and the river intake is fitted with its own electronic flow meter. Readings are monitored monthly, so the volume taken from each source is known precisely and can be checked against the licensed limit.

4. Efficient pumping
The wells are equipped with variable-speed pumps, which adjust pumping output to actual demand instead of running at full capacity continuously. This reduces unnecessary extraction and limits stress on the aquifer.

6. Reducing the need for extraction

  • The on-campus wastewater treatment and recycling station treated 145,000 m³ of wastewater in 2025, of which 120,000 m³ (82.76%) was reused for non-potable purposes, mainly irrigation and landscaping (Indicator 6.4.2).
  • Automated irrigation linked to soil-moisture monitoring in campus green areas applies water according to actual soil conditions.
