Campus Setting and Green Spaces

A Modern Campus Rooted in Heritage and Sustainability

Established in 2017 by the Imam Hussein Holy Shrine, the University of Warith Al-Anbiyaa embodies the harmony between spiritual heritage, modern education, and environmental responsibility. What began with four pioneering colleges — Administration and Economics, Engineering, Law, and Nursing — has evolved into a thriving institution of eight colleges and 18 departments, all located within a single, purpose-built campus.

Nestled on the outskirts of the Karbala Governorate, a region of immense cultural and religious significance, the university enjoys a tranquil suburban setting that fosters reflection, focus, and learning. Its location along the Baghdad–Karbala route ensures convenient access for both national and international visitors, with close proximity to major transport links and ministry offices. The surrounding landscape of arid plains and farmlands provides clean air, scenic views, and a peaceful atmosphere that enhances the wellbeing of students and staff alike.

Smart Campus Planning and Infrastructure

The university campus spans 114,210 square metres, carefully designed to integrate academic, administrative, and research buildings with open green areas and student wellbeing spaces.
A total of 36,783 m² is occupied by buildings, including:

  • Al-Esma, Al-Ola, and Al-Naeem academic buildings,
  • Specialised facilities such as the Central Library, Media Building, and Nursing Building,
  • Communal structures like the Cafeteria, Mosque, and Financial Affairs Building.

This efficient layout allows 88% of the campus area to remain open — a rare achievement among urban educational institutions — ensuring a balanced relationship between built space and natural surroundings.

Green Ratios and Vegetation Coverage

The University of Warith Al-Anbiyaa maintains a strong commitment to green and open space preservation, ensuring a healthy environment for learning and community life.

  • Forest vegetation: 4,083 m² — equivalent to 3.57% of total campus area, used for research, teaching, and community engagement.
  • Planted vegetation: 35,320 m² — or 31% of the total campus area, comprising trees, shrubs, and landscaped zones that promote biodiversity and shade.
  • Water absorption areas: 60,886 m² — 53.3% of the total campus area, designed to enhance stormwater infiltration and reduce surface runoff.

Together, these features create a self-sustaining green system that contributes to the local ecosystem, moderates microclimates, and reduces the urban heat island effect. The abundance of open space also provides opportunities for outdoor learning, recreation, and nature-based research.

A Sustainable Environment for Learning

Through thoughtful land use, ecological landscaping, and sustainable infrastructure design, the University of Warith Al-Anbiyaa offers more than just a physical campus — it represents a living example of environmental stewardship in higher education. The university’s balance between development and conservation reflects its broader vision: to nurture knowledge within an environment that values both innovation and harmony with nature.
